Sen. Loretta Weinberg has been a strong voice leading the fight to change the culture of sexual harassment in New Jersey, and we at the N.J. Chamber want to thank her for acknowledging and supporting the actions taken by the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce to address this issue.

We are gratified that Sen. Weinberg recognizes that the N.J. Chamber is taking the issue of sexual harassment “very seriously” and that this year’s Walk to Washington train “is probably going to be one of the safest trains to be on.”

(See Sen. Weinberg's full comments in this ROI-NJ article that appeared on Feb. 18)

For the upcoming Walk to Washington and Congressional Dinner, the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce has taken the following steps, some with the assistance of the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NJCASA). The N.J. Chamber has:

  • adopted and widely distributed a new code of conduct for guests;
  • established a direct phone number to allow guests to immediately and discreetly report an incident of harassment;
  • increased easily identifiable security personnel;
  • prohibited hard alcohol on the train;
  • enhanced annual sexual harassment training for all employees of the New Jersey Chamber to include sections on effectively responding to reports of harassment during events.

Additionally, the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault to conduct a series of sexual harassment prevention seminars throughout New Jersey where business executives can learn new ways to combat the problem at their own workplaces.
